New data reports
In 2023, 22.8% of adults in the United States, or 58.7 million people, experienced a mental illness in the past year. This is defined as having a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder, other than a developmental or substance use disorder.
According to recent studies, the economic impact of mental illness in the United States is substantial, with estimates placing the annual cost at around $282 billion, largely attributed to lost productivity due to absenteeism, presenteeism, and unemployment related to mental health issues.
